Looks like Jack Black got himself a new band. Oh, and the video shows how our forefathers manufactured their little vinyl music discs…

Facebook recommends wrong"friends"

If you ever wondered how Facebook finds some of your recommended friends – they seem to be using imported address books of other peoples. If you are in there and they don’t add you Facebook still seems to find “connections” that does not exist anywhere else (friend of a friend or in your own address books).

Which solves the mystic of some persons in my recommendations that I did not expect to ever come up again ;)

In summary, it seems that even if you choose to skip the contacts you have imported, Facebook will still store your relationship with those contacts. Not only will it continue to include them in your suggestions, but it will also alert them to the fact that you previously imported their email address and that you are registered on Facebook. Facebook clearly states that it will not store your password, but it doesn’t tell you that it will store all your contacts even if you chose to skip them.

Time to set your privacy settings a bit tighter.

Has your Job expired?

I always wondered, how Skype can have so many job offers these days…

Social Web Avatars

I compiled a small list of places where I have to go when updating my “visual social web personality” ;) at http://kurl.de/avatare

Somehow I find all the time “old” avatars while logging into orphaned (by me) social web sites. So for the next change this will be my todo list.

kURL.de with GoogleAnalytics Extension

I wrote a little test script to extend kURL.de with the possibility to add parameters for Google Analytics. More Info about campaign URLs.

No additional data is saved in the database of kurl.de. This extension just adds the parameters needed for Google Analytics to measure campaign, source and medium of the user that came using this link to the resulting forwarding link. That means the link will add information to the Analytics account on the linked website, not at kURL.de (however one has to write this to be understood…)

For now the parameters cannot be changed after creating the kURL.

I am working on a way to extend this functionality to Piwik – without having to store anything in my databases. An Piwik API key will be needed. So right now I think about doing it with some kind of a Greasemonkey script or a Google Gears powered solution. We will see.

Further to come: Internationalization, user accounts and the API for kURL (already there, needs some improvement).
